Or at least try to?

A turtle took its time crossing busy Route 22 in Armonk on Wednesday afternoon, leading a concerned citizen to alert law enforcement officials to ensure its safety.

Officers from the North Castle Police Department were dispatched to a stretch of the southbound lanes of Route 22 near Route 120 shortly after 3:20 p.m. on Wednesday, where there was a report of a turtle in the roadway potentially in danger.

Police said that upon arrival, the turtle had finished his trip and the roadway was cleared from Route 128 to Old Orchard Street. It was unclear if the turtle’s jaunt across the roadway led to any temporary delays for motorists.

According to officials, this is the time of year when turtles nest in the area, laying their eggs. Officials said that locals should not harvest for food for the turtles, as tested turtles show pesticide contaminants, and if one must move a turtle, “hold them by their sides at the back of the shell. Move it in the same direction it is heading. To prevent spine damage, do not pick up turtles by the tail.”
